Different necessities of different periods resulted in a colourful palette of maps. Besides the accurate geographical data dictated by functionality, there was enough room for fantasy as well. With a selection from our cartographic materials we try to present the huge variety of this genre. One can see a roman itinerary together with a street map from the 19th century and a postal fee map; a map in form of a human and one in animal form; a school atlas with mute maps and the map of a battle in the Eighty Year’s War; a manuscript map along with its corresponding printed map; the map of the Amazon and of the Danube; the first map of the Székely Land and a cave-map. You will also find the route of Barents’ expedition, the Africa map of Münster, and you can find out why are spiders the main characters on a map.
